33 Lessons on My 33rd Birthday
Lessons on life, writing, and entrepreneurship.
I just turned 33 years old.
I’ve worked as a teacher. Almost went to nursing school. Worked as an EMT. Worked at marketing agencies. Freelanced for 5+ years, part-time and then full-time.
10 years ago I thought I had life figured out. I was 23 years old, going to graduate school, and thought getting a Ph.D. in history was my future.
Nope.
Instead, I met my wife, had kids, and built a freelance copywriting business. I’ve learned a lot. And I still have a lot to learn. Here are the most important lessons I’ve learned about life, writing, and entrepreneurship.
1. Always bet on yourself
When I graduated with a bachelor's in history, nobody hired me. Nobody hired me when I applied for copywriting jobs at marketing agencies.
Rejection is a part of life. There are no guarantees. When I worked with my first freelance client, I tasted entrepreneurship. I learned what it felt like to bet on yourself.
I would rather be rejected betting on myself than wait for someone to take a chance on me at a company.
