If startups want killer copywriting, they need a copywriter who will ask good questions.

Freelance copywriters should ask questions that dive deeper into the brand to avoid cookie-cutter copy. When you ask questions on a discovery call with founders, you understand who they are as a brand.

  • You learn who they are helping
  • You learn how they help
  • You learn what makes their brand unique

To get to this point, freelance copywriters need to ask 4 ultra-important questions.

1. What is your 6-month goal?

Knowing a founder’s goal will help you determine how actionable you want the copywriting to be.

A startup’s goal might be to build website traffic or convert more leads. But those are drastically different goals. Most importantly, as a freelance copywriter, you must tell startups that your copy isn’t a magic pill that will make anyone buy. It’s designed to articulate a product clearly.

Ultimately, good copywriting aligns with good strategy.
