7 Mistakes I’ve Made as a Copywriter
And how you can avoid them.
I like to share great copywriting examples I’ve researched or written.
But I also want to share my mistakes as a copywriter. Because I wouldn’t be a better copywriter without them. My mistakes have shaped me more than my successes.
Here are the biggest mistakes I’ve made as a copywriter.
1. Rushing the Process
Copywriting is a process. Research, writing, and editing make up that process.
Each stage has a subset stage. You learn every kind of research, writing, and editing to perfect the copywriting process. And that takes time, from weeks to months.
Writing something great takes longer than a day, especially when writing compelling copy.
2. Not Standing Up for a Creative Idea
Copywriters are often subject to creative directors and founders.
In the past, I’ve rolled with whatever the creative director says. I assumed their experience and judgment overruled anything I had to say.
But copywriters also need to learn to explain why their idea works. Copywriters are creatives. If you have a great idea, explain why it will work. Be bold about it.
