Become critical of the little things, not the big things.
Comparison is the thief of joy.
At least, the wrong writing comparisons are the thief of joy. They can destroy your identity as a writer. They can cause you to hate your career as a writer.
But there are good comparisons as a writer. I’ve learned this over the past few years. Good comparisons strengthen you as a writer.
To improve your writing, compare these 3 little things.
1. Word choice
Word choices are a difference maker in your writing.
Choosing what word to describe something can be agonizing. When you find the right word, it gives your writing extra clarity.
If you want to see how you’ve grown as a writer, look at the vocabulary of your writing. Look at your word choice. See how you’ve made incremental improvements as a writer over the years.
2. Compare your sentences
Sentences are music notes.
When it’s in tune, the music sounds melodious. But if something is out of tune, the music sounds awful. Your sentences create music.
