The difference between bad and good copywriters is the focus.

The focus is on what I think the customer wants vs. what I know what the customer wants. Great copywriting speaks to customers emotionally, it resonates with them, compelling them to take action.

To be a great copywriter, you need to think like a customer. Understand them.

To do that, follow these two steps.

Talk to Customers

The most important step for any copywriter is to understand customers.

  • Know their pain points
  • Know what benefits they want
  • Know what outcome they are looking for

To know any of these, you need to talk to customers. Listen to them. Empathize with them. Walk in their shoes.

Research is nothing without the customer. We can’t assume to know what the customer wants if we don’t talk to them.

Synthesize What Customers Say Into Benefits

True copywriting power is taking a customer’s words and putting them on a page.
