I quit my 80k job in September of 2022 to become a freelance copywriter.

More than anything, I wanted to work for myself. I wanted to build a solopreneur business. But first, I needed to build a freelance business — work with clients who needed my services.

Sure, I’ve had slow months. I’ve had great months earning over $10k. But that’s freelancing — it fluctuates. The goal is to build systems. Be consistent.

I’ve learned a lot freelancing part-time and full-time in the last six years. Now I want to share what I’ve learned.

Here’s everything I know about building a freelance business in 2023.

Market yourself 80% of the time

Freelancers often have to do everything themselves:

  • Sales
  • Marketing
  • Branding
  • Accounting

The most important of these is marketing. You need to market your services on social media to reach your target market.

For instance, posting on LinkedIn about your core audience’s problems helps you connect with your audience. They see you as a solution.
