My 5 Favorite Website Copywriting Tips
How to make your words more persuasive and actionable.
--
Websites are the lifeblood of businesses.
If your website’s messaging isn’t great, it makes your business appear:
- Outdated
- Confusing
- Undesirable
Having worked on hundreds of websites and as a copywriter, I have five favorite website copywriting tips to improve conversions.
See how they can transform your website.
1. Test different headlines
90% of website headlines are ultra vague or utter shit.
They don’t promise value. They don’t make a promise to the prospect. They don’t compel action. They do absolutely nothing besides filling a page.
Your website needs a headline that compels action. Your readers want a headline that appeals to them emotionally and even logically.
So, how do you write a good headline? Steal these ideas:
- Make a promise to the reader (Bring your business ideas to life for $1/month — Shopify)
- Make the customer the hero (Go from $0 to $1 — Gumroad)
- Say what you do and who you do it for (Banking built for founders — Capital)
- Tease an outcome (Write better tweets. Built your Twitter audience — Typefully)
- Try the rule of three. Say three things in your headline (One platform. Hundreds of experts. Unlimited analytics — Prevalent AI)
Don’t overthink it. Do your best. Check out Google Analytics to see conversion and click-through rates.
2. Create a frictionless call to action
Subtle changes to your call to action can make a huge difference.
While I’ve talked before about creating a call to action vs a call to value (start exercising vs. start feeling good), there are also subtle changes you can make next to your CTA.
I like this example from ClickUp:
I don’t care about the Get Stated part. The Free Forever. No Credit Card part is brilliant.
