High school and college tend to crush writing souls.

It could be that intense focus on grammar. It could be because your English teacher was just weird and evil. It could be that you aren’t as good a writer as the student, Wendy, the marvelous writer who sits next to you in class.

Either way, it’s hard to build confidence as a writer, especially if you don’t start as a confident writer.

That’s what happened to me.

Here’s how I fixed it.

Write for Yourself

Confidence comes from writing for yourself. If you don’t care about your writing, others won’t care about it either.

These are my favorite ways to practice writing for yourself:

  • Grateful journaling for 15 minutes
  • Expressive writing for 15 minutes
  • Creative storytelling for 15 minutes
  • Describe a boring object for 15 minutes

Care Less About What People Think

You’re not writing for a grade. You’re not writing for approval.
