Do you write because you have to or because you have something to say?

It took me a while to figure it out. I wanted to fit in so I would force words onto a page.

Then I realized that I wanted to write about what I care about. I wanted to tell my story. I learned that from Bill Simmons.

Bill Simmons was a prolific sports writer in the early 2000s. And he created the sports giants, The Ringer and Grantland.

His writing was superb. I fell in love with reading sports articles because of Bill Simmons. Here’s an example of his work. Now he’s done writing and is a bit narcissistic. But I still love looking back at his previous work.

Until recently, I was trying to figure out how to write with more zing. More passion. Bill Simmons did this all the time.

So I studied his writing and discovered he does this one thing very well that every writer should do.

He Puts Feeling Into His Work

You can feel the passion he puts into his work. You can feel that he cares deeply about what he writes about.
