The hardest part about freelancing is building systems.

As a team of one, it’s incredibly hard to do everything yourself. You must market your services, pay taxes, do the work, and more.

Structure and systems help you be a better freelancer. But what does that even look like? It took me years to figure it out. I guessed at it. I did things randomly. Until I mastered these five steps.

Here are the five steps you need to master to be a better, higher-paying freelancer.

1. Consistent marketing

I often hear freelancers say, “I don’t need to market myself because I have enough clients.

That’s a mistake. Because these same freelancers are often scrambling to find new clients when they lose a client. Freelancers need to systemize their marketing efforts to keep their pipeline full.

That means they need to create a consistent marketing plan to meet their target market. Posting on LinkedIn, Twitter, and cold emailing are part of my marketing efforts.

If I can’t take any more clients, I do two things:

  • Refer them to another
