Why I Quit My 9–5 to Join the Creator Economy

In 2017, I jumped into freelancing.

I quit pursuing nursing to become a full-time content marketer and copywriter.

Except I had no idea what I was doing. My income dipped. I built up credit card debt.

I was a mess.

My freelancing approach was widely inconsistent:

  • I sporadically sent 1–10 cold emails to any company
  • I had an Upwork account that landed me 10 cents a word clients
  • I marketed myself to everybody and it felt like nobody noticed me

I did land a $2,500 retainer with a marketing agency to write their emails. Except that made me complacent and lazy. I felt some stability.

That gig eventually turned into a full-time copywriting role. A few years later, I was hired as a copywriter by a startup marketing agency that gave me a $20k raise.

I was making $80k as a copywriter. I felt accomplished. I learned marketing. I learned copywriting. I landed a great copywriting job. I did it!
